Stepping into a new yoga studio for the first time can feel a little like arriving in a new country. You’re excited, maybe a little nervous, and wondering if there are any secret rules you should know. Don't worry, there are no secrets. Just a few simple etiquette tips that help create a calm, welcoming space for everyone.

Think of these not as rules, but as mindful actions that connect you with the community from the moment you walk in. Here's your simple guide to feeling confident and comfortable from your very first class.

1. Arrive Early, Settle Your Space

We’ve all been there: rushing into a class just as it starts, feeling flustered and unprepared. Arriving 10-15 minutes early gives you a chance to check in, find a spot, and simply breathe while you settle in. This quiet time on your mat is where your practice truly begins.

If you’re not sure where to set up, just ask the instructor. They'll help you find the perfect spot whether that’s in the back to observe or closer to the front to see the poses.

Tip: If you're new to yoga at Fitness First, we recommend setting up somewhere in the middle so there'll always be someone in front of you as a 'visual guide' if you missed a cue.

2. Let Your Phone Rest

Yoga is a dedicated time to unplug. Before you enter the studio, switch your phone to silent and leave it in your locker. This ensures that you and everyone else can enjoy a practice free from beeps and distractions. This small act of mindfulness is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself during your class. If you're recording yourself, be courteous and inform the other yogis around you too.

3. Respect Your Neighbour's Mat

In a full class, mats can be close together. Think of each mat as a person’s personal island. Place your mat with enough space for you and your neighbour to move without bumping into each other. When you move through the space, step around other mats, not over them. This quiet awareness is part of the respectful yoga mindset.

4. Listen to Your Body, Not Just the Teacher

This is the most important tip of all. The instructor is there to guide you, but your body is the real expert. Don’t feel like you have to do every pose perfectly. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s completely okay to modify it or take a break in Child’s Pose. This isn't a sign of weakness but a sign that you are listening to yourself, and honouring where you are with the practice. Just like any other fitness or exercise routine, injuries can happen when we're not careful and push ourselves beyond our own limits.

5. Quietly Clean Up After Yourself

The practice doesn't end when the poses do. After the final relaxation, take a moment to wipe down your mat and any props you used with the provided cleaning spray. It’s a simple act of respect that helps keep the studio clean and welcoming for the next person.

Now that you know the 'unwritten rules,' you have everything you need to begin. By following these simple tips, you’re not just preparing for a class, you’re setting yourself up for a better practice and a more connected experience.
